Was he going to back hand her or telling her to back hand someone? Either way, it's still hitting. But if he was saying he was going to back hand her, then there is a problem.

Back hand is a term used to describe a side of the hand. The back of your hand is the side that is opposite of your palm.
The term backhand can mean many things depending on how it is used (in relation to sports, etc).
However, if someone says they are going to backhand you, it is an act of violence. It is a slap using the back of the hand.

To back hand someone is a very degrading thing to do. Sounds like this guy is not the kind of guy I would want my friend to be with. Tell her she can find much better. Everyone deserves respect!

Well, in the usage that seems most probable from your description the fellow may have said he was giving someone the back of his hand, which is an idiom for brushing someone aside.
It comes from the notion that if you swing your hand outward to strike someone with the back of your hand (as opposed, for example, to using your fist) your intention is not really to knock them down or do them serious injury, but rather to brush them aside in such as way as to register your contempt for them without doing much in the way of physical harm.
When someone complains that so and so "gave me the back of their hand" what they mean is that they were expecting better treatment from so and so than they got. A loyal employee goes to his boss after years of conscientious service and asks for a raise or a promotion, but the employer gives it to someone else. The employee might then fairly say, "I asked my boss for a well-deserved raise, but he gave me the back of his hand."

Back hand means to hit them in the face with the back of your hand - kind of like a reverse slap.

I think he means a physical strike, like a slap, except with the back of the hand. Kindof like the stroke in tennis...
