Nuclear.
Why? Because it is clean, cheap, available when we need it and we have fuel resources for about 10, 000 years.
How long will it take to make it viable? It could replace 95% of fossil fuel use within 5 years if environazis would stop their efforts to prevent constrution of nuclear reactors.

My first thought was nuclear - but after thinking about it for awhile - what to do with the waste is a big concern and nuclear power isn't going to get us back and forth to work very well or take us on vacations, and the automobile or some mode of personal transportation isn't going to go away. Electricity is often sited as a polution free solution - but the batteries have to be charged and that power has to be generated someplace ("out of sight, out of mind" mentality doesn't make polution go away). Hydrogen fuel cells is a very promising technology. (I'm sure Exxon/Mobile wouldn't agree). Biofuels are a short term step in the right direction, but not a very viable long term solution. In short, I guess if anyone REALLY had the answer to what the best alternative method of energy is, all of the money being spent on all of the different methods being researched and tested now would be pooled together and concentrated on getting it up and running. Presently $3.00+ a gallon makes almost any alternative worth the R&D. In my opinion, unfortunately, I don't see gasoline going away in the near future.

THE CLEANEST ENERGY SOURCE WOULD OF COURSE BE HYDROGEN FUELS BECAUSE IT HAS AN EXPONENTIAL AMOUNT OF ENERGY AND IT COMES FROM SEPERATING WATER THE MOST ABUNDANT NATURAL RESOUCES ON EARTH AND THE BYPRODUCT OF THAT IS OXYGEN WHICH IS A PRETTY NICE THING TO HAVE IF YOU WANT TO BREATHE OF COURSE. BUT HYDROGEN IS KINDA VOLATILE AND IT TAKES AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF CARE TO MAINTAIN BUT IF ONE COULD FIND A WAY IT WILL FILL THE VOID OF GETTING RID OF FOSSIL FUELS.
