Do DVD's have to be formatted? I bought some that matched my burner but it will not recognize that there is one in the burner. I put the one in that came with the burner and it burns just fine.

Do I need to take these back?

No, the DVD is written by a laser beam which perforates the aluminum coated plastic, if your burner don't recognize it is maybe because you have used the wrong media, like you are using a +R when your burner only recognize the -R.. Cyb

Looks like maybe you got some "Defective" dvds if you buy them at a store they should never be formatted all already have been formated once you buy them and open them up they shoud be all ready to burn. Best thing to do is return them or ask for an exchange.

Check what Disc you are buying, Are they - RW , + RW, and does the Burning Program Read them, along with the PC... Check your documentation to purchase the correct ones, and My Nero only formats my DVD's when it is necessary, Burning Movie, Adding Files, Etc. Not just to insert to start a burn.. Good Luck

Usually
use DVD +r for a PC
and DVD -r for a DVD player

Check your model and manufacturers site or the owners manual

DVD's must be formatted but they come pre-formatted in almost all cases. Yes, I'd take 'em back.
