I have an answer for you! No it is not true.

"Fastest Flyer - Modern experiments have established that the highest maintainable air speed of any insect, including the deer bot-fly, hawkmoths, and horseflies is 24 mph, rising to a maximum of 36 mph for short bursts by some large dragon flies. " quoted from www.fourth.umn.edu (see source list)

The fastest bird is the Peregrine Falcon.

I bet your bosses dad saw that the 'wings' of a bumblebee travel at 428 mph. They do move up and down very, very fast. This is possible due to an elastic type set up that allows the bee to pull the wings in one direction, then the wings spring back. No they fly quite slow as a rule. Only at about 45kms per hour. Depends on what they are doing though.
If they are going to a honey sale, they would fly about 100kms. If it was their turn to look after the Queen Bee and massage her feet or something they would fly at about 35kms an hour.
