Yeah, unfortuately they could chew through plastic. They still have some pretty cool cages out there though - have you looked on e-bay at all? Oh, and I would recommend metal, as glass ones are much harder to clean and air can't circulate well.

in general, gerbils will chew thru most plastic cages. You would be having to replace it.
Cages with metal bars would be okay, as long as the gerbil is kept in an area where there are no drafts. The cage should be long, not tall and shelves are a waste for gerbils.
I have always kept mine in the long 30 to 40 gallon tanks with a secure metal mesh cover. It has to be a long tank because a 10 gallon is not big enough and a tall tank is wasted space because gerbils don't climb. They like wheels and they like burrowing. As long as the top of the cage is not covered with anything that would prevent air flow and is in a well-ventilated area AND it's cleaned weekly (scrubbed down) the air movement in there shoudl be fine.
If it is a baby gerbil, it's best to get a friend of the same sex as they are communal animals. MAKE SURE they are the same sex. (two boys or two girls, etc) Older gerbils require a bit more patience to introduce to another gerbil than I would recommend for a newbie owner.

First, don't get just a single gerbil! They are very social animals and should definitely be kept in at least pairs.
Gerbils do chew through plastic. And those cages usually have the wire bars that they will chew on as well which is dangerous. They also do not allow the gerbils to pile up bedding to make a deep nest.
The best housing for gerbs is a 20 gallon long tank or larger with a screen top. It lets them dig to their hearts content and they can have as much bedding as you want to give them. It also prevents drafts from making them sick.

i would go with the metal cage. He wont be able to chew through that and it will allow air flow. Gerbils and any rodents can chew through plastic.

I would personally recommend the metal cage. If he could chew through plastic it could harm him so i would rule that out.

metal.it lets them have air so they dont get too hot or too cold.they can die from cool drafts of air and from the heat.if you want to put it by a window the metal is deffinately better.hope this helps.
