My computer has Windows XP last nite, this morning when I clicked the mouse it showed a Windows 98 operating system. Could not access all my files. What is the best solution? Help.
Format the HD and re-install?

It's probably still XP but someone has hosed you by turning on the "Classic" desktop theme. It makes XP work like 98 for people who hate new things.

Just switch back to the XP Standard.

Do you have Dual Boot Set on your OS, it sounds like it. And it is Never Safe to leave a PC on all night for this reason, it may have been a "Wake on Lan", or your modem is set to Wake the System, If you have both XP and 98 installed then it could be the PC rebooted by itself and for some reason chose 98 to start first.. Broad Question, not enough information to troubleshoot your problem.......... Good Luck

Is there a cd or floppy in the drives? Can you right click the desktop and see what picture is set as your background. If you hit the windows key does the menu "half launch"?

If so, you are being pranked by someone. We do this to the new techies on the floor. We change a bunch of superficial crap to their PC and watch them freak out for ten minutes.

After you get your system back to XP install and run all of these.

What you describe is not usual but it can happen.

Have fun but be safe. If you need more help let me know.

your pc is not hacked..
the most likely you have a dual boot as what jarhead says. when you start your pc can you see this:

Microsoft Windows Professional "cant remember the exact word"
Microsoft Windows

if you can see those things while you starting your pc, you probably had dual boot, or two operating system.

higher is your winxp
and lower is win98

you can use your up down cursor to choose what operating system you like to login. you 25 seconds to do that otherwise the default one will do.

That doesn't sound right. But, anyway...yeah, wipe and re-install Windows. Be sure to setup Automatic Updates and install SP2.

hi, there is virus with your IE browser, i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
