We just bought my son a whole bunch of toys, but he hates all of them! He's also very active, but sits up on his own. He would rather play with his bottle lids and measuring cups rather than all of the toys we got him, very frustrating cuz we spent quite a bit of money on them. Anyway my suggestion would be to find stuff around the house first before spending all the money on toys. Been there, done that. But if you do want toys, the one thing that my son absolutely loves is the "Leap Frog Interactive Learning Worm". It plays muscial medleys, songs about color, number songs, & a couple other things. It's not too hard for him to activate & has stuff hanging off the bottom that he can chew on. It also straps across carseats & strollers which is always a plus. We already had to replace the batteries he uses it so much.

My cousin has twin boys (4 months old) & they will just stay on this thing & play contentedly.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3957075 It's says 6 months, but my friend's 5 month old little girl loves to play & chew on this phone (she was always trying to take the real phone & they got this one)
Good luck, I hope you get some good ones :)

Just make sure they are softer toys nothing hard and do make sure there is no loose parts or things a baby can pull off due to they will put into there mouth.. Due to they still do not have full control with there hands and they do tend to hit themselves with the toys or are sitting up and fall over on them. But things that make noise lights up. The baby mirrors they have are great at that age. Makes them think there is another baby there and they will talk and coo at the mirror so sweet.

the only toy a 5 month previous rather desires is mom. you'd assume too a good number of any 5 month previous to casually occupy themselves with toys without the help of mom.

My grandson LOVES Baby Einstein DVDs. He has been watching them since he was 3 months old and they are wonderful! He has learned so much from them. He laughs all the time while watching. He is 10 months old now and stll loves them. There are many to choose from.
I enjoy them too. They also range in ages, I would suggest Baby Mozart or Old McDonald's Farm. Have fun and enjoy your little one!

Get stacking cups. They come in a set of eight. My daughter is 7 years old and still has hers... they float in the tub. When she was teeny tiny she'd gnaw on them, then she got to the stacking stage, and now conducts pouring experiments. They cost about $3 or $4.

Make sure that whatever you get him doesn't have a string or strings on it. What about a little ducky that when he shakes it it makes sounds. Or you can get him this little ringlet from wal-mart it has different little noise things on it that is what we got our little girl and she loves it she bites it and everything.
