rodents in general are nocturnal, but the ones I had with nearly no exceptions were awak at all times of the day and night, they would usually be awake when my mom came in to wake me up in the morning and be awake off and on again through the day.

Hamsters, like most small rodents, are nocturnal. Don't expect it to be awake and interacting with you much during the day. They are most active at night (in the wild, protects them from predators) and so that's why hamster owners always hear that damn wheel going squeaky-squeaky at night.
