If you want to live on the beach and still be within reach of a city, the towns of Chelem and Chuburna are right outside of Progresso, the region's largest seaside city, and about 40 minutes from Merida. Prices are hysterically amazing...you can still find honest to goodness beachfront in the 100k range. And with the possible ferry service agreement between Progresso and Tampa, FL, expect this area to blow up in a very short amount of time. I am putting my money behind this advice...I suggest you do some research and consider the same.

The best beach places are probably the ones with tons of turisum like, Cabo San Lucas, Puerta Vallarta, Cancun, etc. These are great places because if you plan not to use the property all year long there are always people looking to rent on vacation or long term, especially here where I live in Cancun.
