I am looking for information on whether or not a group of people can be conquered without military involvement, historical cases where that may have happened or how it was done.

Simple, take what people already believe to be true - no matter what it is - reinforce that belief over a period of time and make yourself look like the "oracle" of information regarding that belief. Its what cult leaders do all of the time.

It can be done by siege.... if a people are locked in and can't get food and water in and waste out,, they starve and get sick and have to make a deal to survive.

It can be done by sanctions,,

boycotting their markets by not using anything they sell...

, and economic pressures. Like people in the areas of the world that are poor and have to take jobs in American sweatshops.
