because they thought they could compete with the Yankees

2006-08-21 15:44:51 · answer #1 · answered by Voicekiller 4 · 1 0

Because the Yankees are a lot better team and mentally tougher. Example, the Yankees lost two great players in May, and Cano went down in June. At times they had three or four good hitters in the lineup and had to play guys like Bubba Crosby, Andy Phillips, and Miguel Cairo for long stretches. They had to use guys like Terrence Long, Nick Green, Aaron Guiel, and Sidney Ponson. Concerning the injuries, Jeter said "we can't use that as an excuse, we have to go out and play with the team we have." The Red Sox start losing and all we hear are their fans crying about injuries and people "ailing". So Varitek got hurt. Big deal! The pitchers should still be able to get somebody out once in a while. Varitek, the guy who attacked A-Rod, and wasn't man enough to take off his mask, is not the reason Boston sucks. If you watched ESPN at all today, everyone agrees that the Yankees are just more powerful and Boston isn't very good. The Yankees were playing well BEFORE they got Abreu, even with injuries. Boston is too eager to find excuses.

Ok this debate is going down right now.

This is not the year we should worry about smoking everyone.
To start things off..
Papi is having and unbelieveable season
Manny is hitting very well.

Without our captain Jason Varitek out of the lineup
things have gotten out of line
You expect 2 back up catchers (Javy Lopez & Doug Mirabelli) to catch equally with an all star catcher. No
Even though Jason was batting .250-.260. His fielding was tremendous.

The other thing we have to do is make the key plays
which win key games
which get you into the 1st place position not the 6.5 games back and no wild card.

Lowell dipped during the week before this 5 game series.
Cora filled in for Gonzalez for the last 3 games due to an injury with A-Gon.

Loretta is hitting fairly well and deliverying in klutch sitiuations, but his glove has dipped below his line of excellence.

Youkilis has played an outstanding first base. He has hit very well.

So with the analysis of the infield you see that 3 of our key 4 infielders are ailing.

Now onto pitching.
1.) Curt Schilling- Great, hitting the spots very well, and still maintaning which holds this team together.

2.) Josh Beckett- First of all, this pitcher needs to learn how to pitch to strike guys out. When you start out on a count 2-0 you cant throw another fastball for a strike because it is way to easy to hit. So if Papa Jack works over the off season with Beckett, he will come back a very different pitcher. He needs to find himself and realize his potential with this team.

3.) Jason Johnson- Who the hell is Jason Johnson. And why is he starting the series. He came into that game 3-11 with a 4.72 ERA.
The pitching rotation goes Schilling, Beckett, Lester, Wells. Working in these so called Johnson and Snyder. This year was injury plagued. Without veteran Wakefield and a nice addition Clement in 2004. If I could make the starting rotation with these guys next year it would be.. Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, Wakefield, Wells and Lester.

So meanwhile through all these injuries and chance situation pitchers from Pawtucket and other farm teams, Terry Francona is expected to go from 2.5 games back against the top Yankees team to go 3 games up. Not likely with these guys missing.
So it is not all management its mostly player-execution. That is why we were beat by the f****** yankees.
