My father used to smoke for 54 years. He NEVER smoked in the house or our cars. He'd go out to smoke. It was a RULE. You wanna smoke, GO OUT. Yes, even in winter OUT OUT.

Believe it or not, I am a smoker and hate the smell of smoke in a house. I only smoke in two rooms where I keep the best air purifiers and smoke right next to one. Otherwise I smoke outside on the screened in porch as I am positive that non smokers would not even want to come into my house if it smelled like smoke. Leaving cigarettes in an ashtray are a big NO NO in my house. I leave the air purifiers on all night long and any time I smoke beside it. The other suggestion I use is leaving odor absorbing gels hidden all over the house...citrus scent...

The best way to keep a smokers house fresh is to air it out regularly. 3-4 times a week open up doors, and all windows in the house. Leave them for 1-2 hours or as long as you can stand. Sometimes in cold areas in winter 15 min is too much, but cold air actually helps more than hot. And in hot weather it is miserable to leave it open that long, so do it more often for shorter periods.
.After you have aired it out if there is still a bit of lingering scent wash down the walls and windows with isopropyl alcohol. This removes the nicotine from them which removes much of the lingering smell's source from your home
Lastly, use your favorite air freshener to give a light clean scent to the room.
This is what I do and most people are surprised to find out that a smoker lives with me.
Actually I live with two

I'd say one good way is to keep the walls clean. If you've ever dealt w/ the walls after a smoker has lived in a place for awhile, you know that it leaves a sticky, yellow residue on the walls. That residue stinks! I clean it by moping the wall w/ a bleach solution (yes, I use a mop.) After doing that, the whole apartment smells much cleaner.
I can't imagine living w/ an in the house smoker. I've never permited it,but my mother was rabidly anti-smoking, so I was raised that way.

Your mother (not you) should ask your father to smoke outside (on a porch, in the yard, somewhere he's already enjoying). Provide a cozy chair and canopy of some type for rain, etc. You can do this first, set it all up, and make it special so that when she does ask, he'll more readily agree. 1st deal with getting him outside before cleaning basic structures such as wall, ceiling, drapery, upholstery, bedding, etc. Smoke is tough to get out of a home. Then open windows and keep them open while you clean. Use one of the products out now that neutralizes tough odors as a followup. Lemon based products will cut through staleness as will most citrus products, if not all. Finally, once all that is done, continue airing home every day for at least 15 minutes...even in frigid winter!! It kills BAD bacteria/germs. Keep chatting outside with dad as he smokes less and less due to your gentle nagging. Help him get involved with some hobby with which he has to use the arm he smokes with quite frequently (stitching, sawing, brushing, etc.). He will need all the support and creativity possible from you and mom. Best of wishes and I 'll pray for your dad agreeing to move it outside.

Most smokers that I know smoke outside now a days. Smoking indoors gives off a yellow film and yes, the smell. Ask him to smoke outdoors because you guys don't want to be breathing it in anyway.

Boy you extremely requested for it living with someone who smokes. the smoke receives on your clothing and on the walls of the living house. you could attempt to get them to regulate manufacturers, some smokes scent worse than others. Marlboro's have a fairly undesirable scent. except that short of having them to smoke outdoors, think ofyou've got some scent it really is continuously going to be there. you could attempt the persons who smoke candles, or purely open the living house windows each so frequently to enable in sparkling air, keep airfreshner and candles round.

Get a hepa filter from Wal-mart and put it right beside where he smokes and it will take all the smoke out of the air. I bought one for my mothers house cause she smokes a lot and my brother sat beside it and smoked a cigar to test it and you could not smell the cigar on the other side of the room. Figure on paying about 250.00-300.00 for a good one.

Smoke in my home too. We bought two air purifiers and once someone came in and I lit a cigarette and the person said "I didn't know you smoke. I don't even smell it in the house. How do you keep your house from smelling like smoke?" I said, well, it must be the air purifiers I have running.

My cousin has a housemate that is a cigar-illo smoker.
Really stinks.
She bought an Oreck air purifier, and the thing has been worth it's weight in gold!
Works like a charm, and the house no longer smells bad.
good Luck!

get some smoke free rooms set aside. ideally, you'd like him to go outside for a puff. But you can start by having a room or two off limits for smoke.
Going to the doctor and getting a note sayng your mildly asthmatic can help your case.
if there is an exhaust fan in the kitchen, bring all the ashtrays there. maybe after awhile he will get the hint.
