the back lghts stay on but the front ones go out..if it was a short wouldnt it kill all the running lights???

That is the way that they are designed. Manufacturers didn't start having the parking lights come on with the headlights until about '69-'70 ... Everything is fine.

I know on some older vehicles the running lights did go out when you turned on the headlights, but I didn't think it was as late as that. Did they just start doing it?

in the journey that they are an same length socket swap it round.. if no longer an same ,examine if there are unusual tape on the harness, signal that it became artwork on ,,and turn the line some signal mild are stressed out to blink alternately with the parking mild at the front,,

On the 64-66 chevy trucks that's the way they are suppose to work. It's probably the same.

owned a 65 f100 and a68 bronco did the same no prob. for you
