I think you are asking if a dog will attack without a reason, and the answer is, no. The reason may not be apparent to you and me, but the dog has a reason, instinct. I think dogs, as all animals, us included, are aware of our surroundings and we have a built in set of rules we all live by, known collectively as instinct. Us human types also have a social engineering thing going on, the way we were raised. A good example comes from the insect world, arachnids specifically. A spider spins a web, why? Bucause it has a built in rule which says to do so. The spider does not think about it, it just does it. If something gets in the web, another set of rules come in to play, and the spider goes to see if what is in the web is food. If so, it eats the food. Simple, elegant, but totally robotic actions. Dogs are an order of magnitude higher, but the same kind of riules govern the dog's actions in a given situation. Dogs get happy, dogs get sad, dogs feel fear. The dog perceives a threat, the dog attacks, a simple fight or flight respnse.

there is always a reason, though often times we do not realize what that reason is. For example, if a dog has been abused by a previous owner, and a new owner who means no harm, does something like try and get them to swim or even if they wear a similar dress, it could remind them of their old owner and prevoke either agressive or defensive bahavior.
certain situations can put dogs on the edge, it really depends on the dog. Most dogs don't attack unless they are afraid of something, feel threatened, someone enters their territory, or gets hurt.
some dogs, however, may just have bad historys and never feel comfortable with humans.

99.99999999999% of the time that is correct. However, there are exceptions to general rules. The dog could be injured or sick in some way to affect its thought processes. Most injured animals do not like to be touched even by persons they know very well. It could be a rabid animal. One of the symptoms of rabies if untreated for a while is, for lack of a better term, insanity. Normally, though if you approach an untrained dog with true "nice" intentions, it will respond nicely to you. Some K-9s are psycho because of training and no one can get near them no matter how nice due to their training. [I knew one that would rock the whole SUV anytime anyone except his handler got near the vehicle.] A dog's ability to sense things is much greater than ours. If you are telling a lie by acting nice but want to do harm, your odors, tenseness and other clues that humans cannot detect may set the dog into an aggressive state.

only if they are sick or rabid. However, sometimes the reasons are very small, like an elderly dog who may have lost his sight might snap just because he got startled, whereas a dog who has been abused in his past might attack at something he thinks is a threat - like someone coming forward to pet him.
Dogs usually have a reason, but if you don't know the dog, you won't know its triggers.

unless they are rabid that is usually the case.....they are not attack animals unless they are starving, they have been domesticated for so long it takes a lot to make a dog attack unless they have been trained to do so! They do sense fear though in humans which will often trigger their own fear...I don't consider that an attack though....

Dogs don't attack for fun. They will attack if they think you're threatening them, their young, their territory, or their families--this can be you punching their owner in the face or just looking in their eyes, which might be thought of as "nothing".

yes. just as a bee will never sting for no reason. usually if you act friendly you can get just about any dog to be friends with you. examples of it having a reason to do so is if it has been trained to do so, or you are invading its property.
