XP Home,
To Manually Install the Backup Utility
Insert the CD Rom and navigate to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup, When the wizard is complete, click Finish.
XP Pro: This feature is included, already installed, go to Start, Accessories, System Tools, Backup...
OR
Right Click on the Harddrive, tools, Backup... Good Luck, and if the system is riddle with spyware, and it's unsuccessful in cleaning it then only back up your personal files that you KNOW are spyware free, or you may transfer them to a newly formatted OS.. Good Luck

If you are going to reformat your hard drive the only stuff you can back up and reuse is you data and original install programs.
Your CD Writer is a good choice for a backup device.
You will not be able to back up installed programs because when they install they make entries into the system Registry file.
Have fun but be safe.

you can either burn stuff to CDs or get a USB removable hard drive and copy the stuff to that.
