I'm a college student looking to buy a reasonably priced Laptop to do homework on and surf the net, nothing fancy. Are the certain brands or certain features I should look for or avoid?

nothing specifis that u ought 2 lookout for
a general purpose notebook, a basic kind should be good enuf

my choice would be somethin like the dell inspirion e1405

the base model at $679 is a fine notebook

good looks, pretty much portable, great os - win xp media centre 2005, also good for some music & dvd flicks ....

i won't recommend a $500 basic celeron ...
u wont really enjoy working on it ... will serve u'r purpose tho
lottsa drawbacks ...

I personally like HP laptops. I got mine from best buy and thought it cost about the right amount. I have seen some sales at CompUSA that were REALLY good.

I would highly recommend a AMD processor (3200+ or better), they are cheaper than Intel processors and perform just fine. Don't get a huge hard drive. 60-80 GB should be more than enough. 15.4" monitors are about right.

Well, not really. Any pc is fine for just surfing and doing homework, you don't need a Power Book or anything. I recommend free Word processors, if you don't want to pay for MS Office:

I have a Compaq Presario and its good, for the price. I here Dell is low priced and sometimes low quality. Try HP Compaq or Toshiba. Toshibas are usually heavy though.

I just bought a new Toshiba for $500 at Circuit City. Very nice computer for college. If you're not a PC gamer, its fine.

This is the 2nd Toshiba I've bought, they're good computers.

For ur simple use try "Acer Travelmate Series" or "HP Presario dvXXXX series"......... 'coz they r fine at work 'n low at prices

For ur kin of work even CELERON Laptops costing around 30-33k would do, but i would suggest going for Pentium M if ur budget allows.

You can find several Laptops reviewed at http://www.cnet.com
