My friends little girl turns 1 this weekend and they are having a party for her. Would it be better to get her a toy or something she could enjoy now? Or something like a savings bond that would mature and help out later?

I'd say a good gift is something she could use, like clothes. At one, she probably wouldn't care much if the gift was fun or not, so I'd say get something that is good for both the little girl and the family. A savings bond is also a nice idea if you want to spend a bit more money on her.

I would get her a toy or some clothes or something she can enjoy now...savings bond im not too sure about but the parents might find a way to use that later instead of giving it to her. But if you do deside to give her a savings bond i would make it unusable until she is 25 years old if you can instead of normal 18 or 21 because you dont want her to use it for stupid stuff and by the age 25 she will have matured enough to put it to proper use.

She is still so little that it wouldn't matter to her. Even pots and pans will make a 1 year old happy. But a doll would be nice or if you want to help out and start her on a savings bond. That would be good too!

It really all depends on how much you're wanting to spend, if you're really wanting to go big then you can always do both. Coming from a parent a doll is more practical on the having something to play with, but from the aspect that college is expensive then the savings bond would get her set up on a college fund.

No savings bonds!! How about a princess costume that she can play dress up in, get her picture taken in, and then wear for a Halloween costume? Another idea is a set of classic children's books, ones that were your favorites, or ones that remind you of something or think she will like. Be sure to inscribe each book with your name, the occasion, and date. Maurice Sendak and David Shannon are great authors that have written multiple books that have wonderful pictures for small children to look at as they are being read to.

A savings bond is good but wouldn't you love to see the joy on the little girl's face that she shows when she is playing with the gift that you gave her? What a pleasant and heartwarming memory to have etched in your mind for years to come!

My opinion a Savings Bond! If all my relatives would of bought me bonds, I would of really appreciated it when I was older. I sure don't remember what toys anyone bought me when I was younger, and they are all gone now anyhow. If it was a bond, I could of used it to pay for my education, my wedding or a house!

Even if it seems a little lame now, I think a savings bond would be really cool. My Uncle got my brother, sister, and I one each when we were little, and it was really special when we got older. That and you never know why they'll need the cash (I used mine to pay for a broken ankle!!)

Try a box of diapers. She can use them, and her parents get a little money break. Toys only seem to drive parents crazy cleaning up. Books are really good but seem cheap. Yeah, diapers, toddler foods, clothes.

wow that's a great idea!(bond)
my son turned one last week and his favorites were a dancing Elmo toy and a musical instrument set with a tambourine, chimes, maracas, and it came inside clear drum. at that age
boys and girls are intrested in a lot of the same stuff and they LOVE to bang on stuff
