Just because its not today, doesn't mean it won't be tomorrow.
I was one of those that didn't really soften or dilate quickly-- then it went it went, it went FAST. The nurse sent my family home from the hospital, saying that my daughter wouldn't be delivered for at least another 12 hours-- and there she was, 45 minutes later.
Everyone's body is different, try not to stress about it and be good to yourself. Your body has a marathon to run pretty soon.
I hope all goes well and CONGRATS on your baby!

RE:
Why is my cervix not soften/dilating?
I am 39 weeks pregnant and went to my doctor today expecting to be told I was at least 1cm dilated. Instead, he told me that my cervix is not softening/dilating. He said that we would talk next week if I had not gone into labor by then about inducing me. Does anyone know why my cervix is not...

Mine took forever to soften and dilate!! I thought It would never happen. My doctor advised until my contractions come steadily I will not dilate quickly. The contractions are actually what makes you dilate. I went into the hospital and they had to induce my labor to make my contractions steady and constant for me to dilate. Many women have this problem. It is very common. Nothing to worry about. It could mean you may go past your due date. Talk with your doctor about inducing labor on your due date if necessary. Everything will be fine then.

Don't sweat it honey... I was 11 days overdue and my doctor had me go to the hospital to get induced. My cervix was not dilated nor was it even soft!! They gave me something called Cervadil (?) to soften me up...it takes 12 hours...after the first dose it didn't do anything so I had to go through another dose and wait 12 more hours to be induced! Not trying to worry ya, Sweetie....just keeping it real. Sometimes those darn babies just don't want to come out! =) Best wishes and congrats on your soon-to-be baby!

Don't feel bad, yesterday 8/22 I went to the doctor and I am in the same boat!! I am 39 weeks prego & cervix is not open or anything!! It's frustrating because I am so anxious and everything is ready for my little guy, but him! My doctor told me he usually lets women go about a week and a half before he we induce them as long as there are no problems! I was worried also but everyone is comforting me telling me its nothing to worry about. GOOD LUCK!

Your body is doing exactly what is should. The cervix must soften and get ready for delivery. This is natural progression of labor. Soon you will have your baby, but in the mean time walking can help stimulate labor!!! Good luck

unfortunately your cervix listens to how ready your baby is not how uncomfortable you are D-oh!!!. Its so hard to wait those last couple weeks but your baby might not be ready for a week or two. And that is for a reason. your body doesn't just hold that little baby in there for fun. Trust me your cervix will ripen and your body will more easily give birth to your baby when it is ready. I cringe whenever I hear "induce" Your uterus will not forget to kick that baby out when it is time. Your baby will never be inside your belly again. Enjoy your last week or two.

I was 40 weeks Friday. And I was dialated for one cm for a month!! So everybody is different. Some of my friends went in and never dialated or softened at 39 weeks. I am being induced Thursday because my body is so slow!! Best wishes and good luck!!!

No worries yet. It can happen pretty quick. With my labor I went to the hospital 12 in the night and was send home b/c I was only 1cm dilated. By 4 in the morning my water broke and I returned to the hospital and was 7 cm. Labor can come on fast! You have a full week before you reach 40weeks....just hang in there!
