I suppose my car was standing under a pine tree and tar was dripping on it. Any advice on how to remove it?

I'd be very wary of putting gasoline, turpentine or any of the other volitile chemicals on your car's paint.
They make clay bars that are designed to remove things like tar, sap and other hard to remove bits that might get stuck to your car. Mother's California Gold Clay Bar is a good option:

They make removers just for tar removal. I generally use gasoline or a similar solvent to get rid of the tar, then wash and wax the car(at least the bottom body panels,,:-)=

Wal-mart sells a plastic container of bug and tar remover, it works great.. spray if on wait a few seconds, then it sorta melts it, and rub it off, do this prior to washing your vehicle..

Turpentine is made from pine tar and is the perfect solvent for it.

Turpentine, nathpa, lighter fluid.....no acetone or nail polish remover!

Try a little lighter fluid on a tissue.
