It goes a little bit further than that. He knew of the first plane before he entered the classroom. The Secret Service Notified him of the second. He reacted as if he had just been told they had ordered ham sandwiches for lunch. I would have expected him to excuse himself and get on with being "Commander in Chief". Worried about scaring the kids? Get real, ever since, this admin has spent all it's time trying to terrorfy the American people. He eventually goes to the airport and is flown to LA. From there to NB without an escort. His F-16 escort planes didn't arrive until 15 min before landing. Meanwhile Cheney was almost dragged to a secure shelter in Washington. While all this was going on , Daddy Bush was at a meeting with Osama's brother in NY. The same bro who had financed Geo. W's failed Texas oil ventures. And they wonder why there may be some conspiracy theories out there.

Did you expect Bush to start screaming and running around in circles in front of a bunch of elementary kids. During an interview John Kerry stated that he to his office for two hours after hearing about the attack in order to gather his thoughts. Maybe you would be more informed if you got your news from somewhere else besides the New York Times.

Because he wasn't in panic, he didn't feel the need to jump up and run around like a chicken with it's head cut off and scare everyone. While you think he was sitting there doing nothing, I think he was running through scenarios in his head and deciding what his best course of action should be. His advisors were keeping him abreast of the situation and Cheney was in control in Washington. Give it a rest!

When the first plane hit I remember hearing about it on the radio right after it happened, and everyone thought it was an accident at first.
Then when the second one hit everyone knew it wasn't.

He was delayed in the school because of the Secret Service, they had not come up with a plan as yet for the President to leave (because of the severity of the situation and the unknowns).
