shut it down at least once a week to help clear out some of the processes and also it helps to shut it down and fully charge the battery on a somewhat regular basis.

Well, if its not going to sit for a long long time (4-5+hrs I'd say) It probably be better to just shut it off. If the laptop stays in an A/C enviorment & has extra cooling fans on the stand, Its okay to leave it on however you wish. I personally rarely ever turn my computer off. I let the monitor turn itself off after 10min & leave it as it is. I use my computer frequently & I rarely ever take it anywhere, (phhssst! might as well have a desktop huh?)
PS> Its an old IBM thinkpad, probably a 2000-2001 model I have had problems with my laptop when I hibernate it or let it go on stand-by. Maybe this is just on mine. But i never have problems with leaving it on. & BTW, most problems occur to computers (any computer) during either Shutdown or Reboot. Not while the computer is constantly running. Unless you download a virus or something to that matter of course! :) Also Heat is a particular issue with laptops, Like I said, My laptop sits on I guess what you'd say a Lap-desk?? it has 2 extra fans in it to help keep the laptop cooler & to keep the 1fan it has in it from overworking itself. Also being in an A/C enviorment at all times, so Heat is not an issue when I leave my laptop on.

Hibernating will slowly draw down the battery but you might have a month.
You should do a proper shutdown once in a while but hibernating most of the time is fine.

Sleep- Hibernate or Shutdown. procuring- Stand by skill of/Sleep. ingesting- Stand by skill of/Sleep. college- Hibernate or Shutdown. Now i will clarify what one and all does: Stand by skill of/Sleep- Saves your consultation to the RAM and shuts down so as that it ought to on the instant start up returned. This drains the main battery out of the three thoughts, yet lasts lots longer than leaving the pc on. Hibernate- Saves your consultation to the stressfulcontinual and shuts down thoroughly so as which you turn on your pc top to the place you left off. This makes use of somewhat greater desirable than shutting it off. close Down. Shuts it off thoroughly so as which you do no longer use any battery in any respect. it somewhat is on occasion required to do after updates are put in, or you ought to Restart for that besides the certainty that close Down is greater secure. I forgot the final section there- whilst the adapter is plugged in this is charging and making use of the flexibility from the wall, and whilst this isn't any longer plugged in you utilize the battery. while you're petrified of overcharging your battery, by skill of how, you ought to take out the battery on the same time as this is off (close Down), and plug it in. Your pc might paintings top from the wall then, and of direction in case you unplug it and not making use of a battery in there it shuts off.

Leaving a laptop on while not using it stresses the electronics inside due to heat and being left on...it only has so many times it will come on. Turn it off if not using it.
