You could try to combine the two interests. Look for opportunities to advance filmmaking through science. There have been great advances with digital filmmaking in the last few years. How can you use science in the film or entertainment industry?

You've had your answers already aren't you? So, why are you asking?
Having passion and knowledge towards science has already proven as your career path. Though you claim that you have a reasonable amount of interest in film industry.....but do you seriously want to?
Think about the competitor that you're about to face......if you wanna bring yourself to the movie scene, there will be tons of critic just waiting to diss your upcoming show, don't believe me?
Just open up a movie megazines ot the entertainment section on papers, and you'll know what I mean.
Having knowledge on science like yours it's not a common interest nor amount of large interest could help.
At the end of the day , you deserve more respect if you create something that helps mankind on improving thier lives, i.e; like taking recycling to another level on improving our poluted earth.
Can movies do that? Think about it.

if you want to be a scientist you would have no problem finding a job as a chemist or biologist at pharmaceutical or bio-tech companies. Film is harder to break into though. You'd probably end up working behind the scenes for a while or making films idependently. Niether of which are well paying, but it could pay off in the end.
It all depends on what is more important to you. Money and stability? Or passion and excitement?

To be a scientist, you need a doctorate. You better be smart and study hard. It does not pay much. We have a guy with a PhD in genetics and he is doing computer programming for us. The programming is not related to biology at all. I also knew a guy who was an associate professor at Washington University. He also did research in genetics. I had been in his house and it was not fancy. I knew him for several years and he did not seem rich. I do not know about the film industry.

You aren't extremely creative if you are asking other people to choose the path. Creative people don't even choose paths. They CREATE paths. Do you think Einstein said, "Gee, guys, should I study physics or chemistry?"
Creativity is useful in both science and the movies. Just imagine yourself spending the rest of your life... where? Laboratory or movie studio? Tonight you will dream the answer. Go with it!

It seem you should stick with science first. Since you are just interesrted in film creation at this moment, I would suggest you take at least one introducary class and taste how it is like. May be you won't enjoy post production (cutting and editing film) for 2-3 hours, may be you won't enjoy being a newbie in film studies.

I agree with both Donna and city. You could try some film classes just to see what it's like, and maybe get your degree in science so you have another option in case the film industry doesn't work out.

A friend of mine worked for Mad Science and really enjoyed the job. This might an interesting next step while you evaluate your options. Mad Science creates hands-on, interactive science edu-tainment for children through parties, theatrical shows, school and camp workshops, and after-school programs. They have franchises across North America.

Get your degree in science so you'll have something to fall back on if the whole film career doesn't work out.
