I just would like to know how often it would happen that some other family member could gain visitation with my children, if they haven't had contact with that person for 4 years, and do not even know them?

link below talks about grandparents visitation rights.

Basically, around the country, there is a trend to grant visitation to other family members besides the paternal mother and father, if said relative can pursuade a judge that it is in the best interest of the child.

I'm no lawyer, but if said relative knew where the child was, and for 4 years did not have anything to do with the child, it may be harder to sell to a judge that they should suddenly have interest in the child.

On the other hand, if they can demonstrate that they now have reason to fear for the child, (say, they have recently discovered that parent(s) abuse drugs or alcohol or some other highly irresponsible issues), a judge may very well decide it is in the best interest of the child to have another relative keep an eye on the child.

If your concerned, you could always drop a $100 on a family lawyer to spend about an hour talking about the situation, (being brutally honest about any issues with the parent(s)).
