NO!!! Don't put them together. The domestic rat still has it's natural instincts.

Here is a little story about a friend I know...

Friend had a rat, also had a hamster... Put them both in seperate cages, but then the person moved... and then, they stacked the cages on top of each other. The rats got through the bars, and they dragged the hamsters into the cage and ate them. The person looked for the hamster, and found a couple bodies inside the rat tank.

Just don't put them in with them...

It is almost never recommended to mix species, especially where small animals are concerned. All small animals- hamsters, rats, gerbils, mice, etc. have different temperaments and requirements, not to mention the size differences.

It wouldn't be recommended to keep a hamster with another hamster, let alone a rat. Hamsters are solitary and territorial animals to begin with, and rats are natural predators and competitors of smaller mammals. Putting them together will ultimately end in a disastor with both likely suffering major injuries, and likely even death for the hamster (and possibly the rat, too, due to infections and wounds).

Rats should be kept with other rats, as they are social animals, but hamsters are the opposite. Please do not mix the two.

Why? Hamster in the wild live with other hamsters and rats only live in colonies with other rats. The rat being bigger and aggressive will not share its home with any other animal except another rat and since it can't chase the hamster away will kill and Even eat it. Am glad you are asking before doing-Whenever you are not sure always best to ask first.

DON"T do it unless you want to have a dead hamster! Rats will kill other rodents. I had a rat once and I had like 8 mice. Their aquariums were side by side. At night I woke up to 8 mice lying in a row that were mutilated! I don't know how he got out. But in the morning his lid was off the tank. So i got rid of him too (knowing that it was just instinct) I didn't want to look at him every day and think about what happened. So please don't put these 2 together and make sure that neither one of them can get out.

I think the rat will kill the hamster. Do not put them together. Also hamsters are usually solitary animals. They don't like anything with them including other hamters.

Can you put them in smaller cages next to each other to see if they get along? I would worry that the rat would kill the hamster.

I advise against putting them together. Hamsters are solitary animals who don't like company. Rats are just plain scrappers. Don't put them together. They'll kill each other.

You could if you want, but one of them is bound to die, if not the both of them. But i've seen weider stuff, like a snake and a hamster in a single cage who became friends.
