I am 20 years old and I've been losing hair for the last 3 years or so, though at the time everyone said it was normal to lose hair. However, I am losing a lot of hair every day. Today, my mom remarked that I have less than half the volume of hair I had three years ago... I can't even use tiny ponytail holders without twisting them twice around my hair. I seem to shed hair all the time (in the car, sitting down, in the wind, etc)... I don't ever put my hair up because I'm afraid of pulling hair out. Is there something I can eat (am I missing vitamins in my diet) or shampoos or treaments I can use??
The only cause I can think of is that I used to nanny little kids a few years ago, and they would "brush" my hair and I lost a lot of hair during those months.. would it have caused permanent damage that would continue me to lose my hair? And is there anything I can do?

I'm not on any medications, never colored/permed my hair, and no family history of hair loss.

I do NOT have an eating disorder, and I think I have a pretty healthy diet in general. I've made an appointment with a dermatologist in three weeks (that's the earliest appt that worked with my schedule).

Have your thyroid checked. Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss.

My husband had gastric b,ypass last year and about 6 months ago his hair was falling out really bad. It was due to not getting enough protien in everyday. Now he is getting enough and his hair is very thick.
A second note, my sister is breast feeding and she has been losing hair, the Dr. said that sometimes breasfeeding mom's can lose hair.
I lost my hair for a longtime, it would clog the drain every two weeks. That was due to a medication that I was taking. I stopped taking it and in about 6 months my hair is coming back now.
Usually it isn't premanent. Honestly my hair (now that I am not losing it) is so thick I can't believe it at all. It took my stylist an extra half a hour to do my hair.
Just keep trying it almost always grows back.

Hi there,
just to give you an answer from a medical background point of view. Hair loss can be a sign of thyroid dysfunction, you may need to have your thyroid levels checked. A good B vitamin complex taken every day will also help with creating healthy hair. You should however visit your doctor, as hair that is falling out can be a sign of an underlying illness that you may not realise is there. Hope that was of some help to you.

There is a product on the market for helping this condition. It seems to work pretty well for females.. not sure if this is the right name but may want to check (rogaine). Brushing the hair vigorously, has been accomplished for centuries. It usually enhances healthy hair growth..One of the practices long forgotten in the last 3 generations.
Seeking medical help seems very appropriate at this time..

Ask your doctor is the safe way they can help you treat it,
It can be the shampoo too harsh ingredients. Most importantly is to do somethimg about it NOW!! or u will be waiting 20 more years for your hair to grow in old age, i have the same problem as u, my mom says the same thing. over the past 3 years since after highschool, and i dnt look all that nice anymore with thin hair. so going to my doctor right away...

Hi,
First thing that comes to mind is possible thyroid disorder, or do you have an eating disorder like anorexia? You should go visit you doctor and get it checked out. Also maybe you are using too harsh chemicals on your hair do you dye or perm it or both? I know it sounds gross but don't wash your hair everyday. Let the natural oils from your scalp moisturize your hair. Also regular trims will help eliminate allot of breakage from dry brittle hair and will help keep it tangle free.
Good luck!

Oh, my goodness. Maybe you must delute your shampoo. Then eat more carrots. Also try to find an ALOE VERA LEAF and scrab it on your scalp every day before you take a bath. Or maybe you are using warm water to rinse your hair. Never ever rinse your hair with warm water. It will surely lose your hair. Better use a comb instead of hair brush so as to lessen your falling hair.

Hair loss affects both men and women. Here are some natural remedies that can help boost hair growth: https://bitly.im/aMK3a While genetics plays a role, there are other factors, including: hormonal imbalances, an underactive thyroid gland, nutrient deficiencies and insufficient scalp circulation.

Have your blood work checked and make sure it is fine. Then go see a dermatologist to see if there is anything that is affecting your hair.
Also, if you color or perm your hair, sometimes that will cause hair loss. I lost a lot of hair when I first permed and haven't done that again.

you lose 40-60 hairs a day normally. they are replenished at about the same rate. if u have dark hair you will notice them more often than light or blonde. your nerves can also cause hair loss. or a disease called alopecia. which means baldness or alopecia areata which mean baldness in spots. go to the doctor if you have more concerns.

See a doctor (dermatolologist) to rule out causes of alopecia (medically caused hair loss)
