It depends on when the music was written. Music in history has been divided in general by the era it was written in. for instance, early music was called Renaissance, there was Baroque, Classical, Neo Classical, Romantic, Rococo, Contemporary. More modern genres would include, Ragtime, Jazz,Rock and Roll, Fusion,Rap, to name a few.Hope this helps!
