Example: A salary that we work for is far more precious than money that just falls into our lap. That money is spent easily without a care and is soon gone. Money that we earned is more carefully guarded, saved, and appreciated.

#2. Our children are precious to us, considering that we painfully labor to bring them into this world and constantly worry about their health and happiness and safety. Being a parent is the most difficult job known to mankind, yet the rewards are the greatest.

#3. Even taking something simple as putting together a craft that you spent hours on, making it your own, unique to all others is more gratifying than going out and purchasing something that has been knocked out for many in the population. You can look at it with pride, knowing that YOU created it!

Not to be a grammar or spelling Nazi, but the way you have it written is kind of confusing. It should read:
"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly; that is dearness only which gives it value". Not 100% sure on the punctuation, but the 'too' instead of 'to' makes more sense.

I happen to agree with this statement. The things we work hard for we treasure more than something that was not earned. For instance, a person who works at 3 jobs to save for a car, will appreciate that car more than someone who was just given one for their 16th birthday. Did you ever see the movie 'Robin Hood' with Kevin Costner? He said that 1 man fighting for his own land was just as effective as 10 hired men. It's similar to that. The harder you work for something, the more you appreciate it. Wish I could think of a better example - if I do I'll edit it in.

That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly.
Paine, Thomas

Means we do not respect the things that are given to us and it is very true. If you worked like a dog all summer to buy school clothes, I bet you would take better care of them than the ones your Mom bought for you.

In love, it would mean you value less a relationship with someone who throws them self at at you and value more the person whose love you had to work for. This is why young girls make the mistake of giving themselves sexually to a guy, thinking it will make the guy love them. We all know how boys feel about the "easy" girls.

Think of relationships, if you don't have to try, you don't value the other person as much. With possessions, if you get everything you want, you do not take as much care in handling. Education, the smart students, are often the ones that don't care about their grades.
If it comes easily, it doesn't mean as much.... usually.

yes, teenagers take better care of a car they have to pay for.

My version of it: If we are given something we take it for granted and never appreciate it, but if we works towards something and you struggle for it, you'll appreciate it more.
