I think "Nothin much" is pretty well the only good answer there is unless you have something going that u want to talk about say "things are good,I am the new teamleader" and so on.
Similar dilemma occurs when someone asks "Kya chal raha hai" in hindi, anyway solution is just the same

If it is your boss or some such I would think he or she may be referring to your work. If it is just someone passing in the hallway then it is just a form of greeting like "how you doing?". It really doesn't require much of an answer about anything would do excepting something rude or inappropriate of course.

I found myself getting flip when people would ask me that and sarcasm became my best friend. To break that habit I changed my approach. I try to say hello first, and ask "How are you doing today" or something more specific. Then I get a better response and a lot of times, the next time I see that person they don't say "What's up?" they say "Hi, how are you?"

Honestly, at least 90% of the time when people ask that question they are not actually waiting for an answer. Usually it is just a greeting now a days.
They just wait for a soundbyte before moving on. Why not reverse it and ask them "what's up" before they can ask you?

That I was sick of questions like that one and that "Whazz up" is none of their business. People assume because they have to WORK closely together that their LIVES should be close together. I do not agree. I think we should all have the right to be left alone in our private lives. Besides - the emphasis at work should be WORK and not play.

I say 'nothing' or 'not much' unless something is going on then I tell them what it is.
ie
person one "hey man what's up?'
person two "Not much, what's up with you?'
Person one "nothing, nothing, just counting the hours till we get out of here for the weekend"
and so on and so forth.

Usually you tell someone what is currently happening at the moment. Or the objective you're currently aiming to complete. Whether it be life, work, or other is up to you.
