The ABS computer has received no signal or a signal that is out of range from one of the sensors or actuators. It is not somethign that can be diagnosed with out more information. If it 4 wheel ABS then there are a lot more components than in rear wheel ABS. Either way, when the ABS light is on, you don't have operational antilock brakes. Since it is a safety system, I suggest that you get it to a competent repair shop or the dealer ASAP. It may be simple or complex but only a thorough diagnostic evaluation will provide the answers.

Anti lock brake codes are not available on generic code readers. You will have to find some with a GM techII tester or dealership to down load the trouble code in the ABS unit then repair what they find. Normal braking is not effected when ABS light is lit the truck will just skid, and allow more distance stopping in the wet.

Very worn brake pads/shoes, faulty ABS pump, dirt on the sensors on tone rings, and on, and on. Try this -- pull the ABS fuse out and drive it around the block a few times (don't worry, if the ABS lamp has been on, your system has been off), reinstall it and see if the system resets. Sometimes this will knock some sense into them.

could come on for a number of reasons. low brake fluid, the anti-lock is overheated, the antilock is not getting the power it needs to work.... many many things could be wrong..

Most likely cause is a wheel speed sensor or connection to it. But you really need to have it scanned to see what fault code is present.

I had this problem once, and the mech. had me unhook the battery for a few min. to let the computer reset. It worked.
