In short, because we do what we want to. It is human emotion which allows for the greatest creations and monuments in art, music, architecture and science. It is also what drives hatred, war, and stupidity.
But I think that most, if not all of the mindless destruction of the world will end once men begin to act like men. To stand up on their own two feet and think like individuals, instead of acting like sheep ready to follow the next Hitler.

The answer is in the first part of your question: It is because we humans are capable of so much.
FWIW on the whole, we do swing towards the side of being good. If we were inherently evil, as the bible teaches, we would have wiped ourselves out long ago, and lasting civilizations would not be possible.

Because the human being was created imperfect.
We are drawn to beauty because it symbolizes perfection and immortality (like a diamond--flawless and forever...or something like that) and yet we are destructive because we know deep down, that we will never last forever, thus we are a hopeless race.

I believe something of what agent said.
We have urges, whether from hormones or the, ahem, darker power. Actually most people (that aren't mad , that is) claim they have not caused destruction, even when they REEEALLY have. This is because we have a need of defending ourselves, to cover up our shock - not cover up to others, but ourselves. So we usually think what we do is good.

becuase i think this power was given to us as a test...too see if you can really handle it ..if u can use all that power that is given to you as a human use it for something good...and too see if you can go through life not loathing those who share the power you have...then at the end for those who were able to make it through heaven awaits
