You'll find that the systems in your body are quite interconnected. Most women (myself included) have that exact problem. The change in hormonal levels puts the whole lower abdomen into an uproar. It's completely normal but if you feel the need to calm it down a bit, try Pamprin or Midol (or the generic versions) and something that will relieve the gas such as Bean-o, Gas-X, or their generic equivalent.
Good luck!

During Menstration, a muscle in the abdomen near the uterus lontracts to shed the lining. This action of contraction does, in fact, have an effect on the gastrointestinal tracts and bowels as well as the lower back.
This is the causes of the infamous "cramps" that all girls complain of, as well as upset stomach and gas that many others report.
Gas and upset stomach are both common during the first couple of days of your period. To avoid this problem, try an OTC muscle relaxor 4 hours before your period starts.

Honestly, I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the uterin contractions, but I always get diahrrea the day before I start and the first day of. My cramps the first day or two also tend to make me nauseous.

Probably cramps, and the excess water. Not exactly sure, but its perfectly normal. try some tums and that'll settle your stomach. avoid chocolate, and caffine, they can increase your cramping.
