Perhaps you should get advice from his DOCTOR, not his coach or some idiot on here. Unless his coach has an X ray machine in his trunk, neither you, the coach, nor your son have any idea what he did to his ankle.
Quit being a dumbass and start being a mother. You should have taken him to the doctor or emergency room immediately. If it's a fracture and doesn't set or heal properly, you risk damaging his ankle for life, you dolt.
Getting the message yet?

did he go for an xray or is the coach just guessing this is what is going on? if not he needs an xray to rule out a fracture. the coach was right about the ice and hot water alternating. I would say if the ace bandage makes it feel better then wear it. The doctor could also give him an air cast to wear, which is just as it sounds and helps alot with the pain. I don't think he should play sports until it is healed, he should keep it elevated and take Tylenol or Aleve for pain. good luck.

This is actually a standard treatment for this type of injury. It is very helpful as the ice will take down the swelling and the hot water will keep the injured area from tightening up. I would definitely have his ankle wrapped while he is in school, just so that he does not re sprain the ankle and make the healing process that much longer. Good luck and hope your son has a great and injury free school year.

Alternating ice and hot packs is great. Just do not wear either on his ankle for more than 20 minutes at the time and keep it off for atleast 20 minutes in between. Too long exposore to either hot or cold can just make the swelling/pain worse. I dont see an ACE bandage hurting anything as long as it is not too tight.

personally i would leave the bandage off as much as posible it wil become stronger faster this way. and if he is playing sports i would suggest taping the ankle before. that should get him thro. other then that leave the bandage off as much as possible. as for the hot cold thing good idea. i hurt my ankle a while ago and did a simlar thing. what happens is the ice makes the swelling go down, less swelling the less it hurts. and then the hot water makes blood go to that area and the ankle will swell a bit but the blood will heal the injury. then applying ice after this gets rid of that swelling.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

once you first sprained your foot it became into good to apply chilly compresses and raise it. finding on the swelling or the colour of the foot i might advise till you have considered a doctor to no longer use something warm. you have gotten fractured it. confident, you ought to around the joints it somewhat is a few one that works in the wellness care container inform you this. Get it looked at and stay off it till you do or in case you had it looked at and that's what you have been instructed it became right into a sprain then only element which will help is elevation and time. Ibuprofen for discomfort and swelling.

This is normal. The ice is to reduce swelling, the heat is for pain.
The heat expands the blood vessels to help with healing as well.
DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR TOLD YOU TO DO!!!!!!!!!!
That is why THEY are the doctors.
The ace bandage will not do anything to help healing other than to support it. If you do NOT do what the doctor said to do, the ace bandage can constrict circulation & slow healing. It can also allow the muscles to lose strength. It is doing the work that the tendon & muscles are suppose to be doing.
