What is with the recent legislation to ban smoking in bars? Isn't this a free country and shouldn't free enterprise take over? If there is a market for non-smoking establishments then there will be non-smoking establishments. If enough people get fed up with smoking and quit going to places that allow smoking then there will be non-smoking places without the government controlling more of our lives then they already do.

It all started with the laws limiting firearms. They said it would stop there. They were wrong. It will get worse.

There's more than just free enterpise at stake. Stop smoking Nazi's want to ban smoking in your own home. I understand there was a study by the U.N. that is not mentioned because if found no correlation between 2nd hand smoke and any illness.

The principle behind all this is that since government pays for health care, that smoking increases the cost of health care. An idea that is disputed on the facts, smokers die sooner and don't collect as much in government aid as non-smokers.

I think the bridge too far is a new law in Arkansas which is going to require that any place of employment with more than 3 employees has to be smoke free. The law won't be enforced.

Bottom line is if you are enjoying yourself somebody's not going to like it, and is going to try to get a law to stop you.

I don't know how long a person will live without smoking or drinking but I'd bet it'll seem like a million years.

I used to agree but I don't now because the workers there have no choice. I think the solution is to start a database of all smokers and non-smokers (and employees, of course) and have each bar and tavern make a once-and-for-all choice to go one way or the other, even if that means that everyone of them is considered "a club" legally where you must be a member to join. This could even be a National thing where a lifetime $10 gets you into the association of smoking or non-smoking bars - in fact, if a person wanted, they could join both groups. That still doesn't deal with the issue of musicians, clean-up people, plumbers, police going in, etc., which is the reason why this issue is not going to go away any time soon.

The legislation is the health of the people that choose not to smoke being forced to "smoke". If there was a way to keep smoke away from the ones that didn't want it, then that would be something different.

I do have to say, even though I am a non-smoker, I do not agree with the banning of smoking in places like bars, where smoking is expected. If people don't like it, they can choose to go elsewhere to drink.

I believe it should be up to the establishments owner to decide whether smoking is allowed. If smoking is allowed, then those offended would/can stay out.

I don't believe the government should have the right to legislate such things.

True - have you noticed that if someone in the group does not want to be around smoke, the others will not join them in a non-smoking area, but if a person wants to smoke the others WILL join them in the smoking area. So it is the non-smoker's choice. They want smoking banned so they would have someone to talk to in a non-smoking area.

I totally agree with you on this!! The owner of the establishment should have the right to decide whether the business is smoking or not!

you are so right
If non smokers do not like the place they are in, because of smoke, and there health then they need to go some place else. what in the hell gives them the right to infringe on a smokers rights, just to make them selves happy,. Their is a reason why buying cigarettes from another county is illegal, you don't have to pay us taxes, get rid of them taxes for a day from every tax payer and you would see, the government would give smokers what ever thy want!!!!!!!

A-freaken-men. I say that if you are an owner of a restaurant and want to allow smoking, then you should be able to allow smoking. What about this - we know that drinking and driving kills (as does liver disease from drinking), but why isn't drinking in bars banned? It can take years to die from smoking, but drunk driving can kill in an instant.

My opinion:
If you don't like the smoke don't go to the bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't go out of my way to be rude but I have the right to smoke. You have the right not to.You don't have the right to limit where I do it.As far as I am concerned it is discrimination and it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pretty soon we won't be able to smoke in our cars or walking down the sidewalk. We already can't in some places. It had gotten beyond rediculous. When did their rights become more important than ours?
If they don't like it STAY HOME! GO TO A NON-SMOKING FACILITY.
They sure as hell have them everywhere. We should have places WE get to smoke!
