my psychiatrist told me that depression is caused by my brain not having enough seratonin so that when my "glass" gets empty I become "down and out". Although it may be possible for depression to come from your mind, I know that it is also possible for outside influences to play a part in the depression. Most people I know say that they become depressed because something happened. I have not yet found someone that can say that it just occurred one day out of the blue. If your depression came from nowhere your best bet would be to seek professional help because it may be part of something else such as bipolar.

Wow...I look at these different answers, and I see many people that are misinformed on this subject. I know from personal experience, that the illness called Depression is NOT all in your mind, and is NOT something you can control by thinking happy thoughts, or keeping your mind from being idle. Depression is NOT always caused by sadness.

I went to a doctor once and he sat with me and we talked. I was there because I was not sleeping, I was not eating, I felt sick alot, and I just plain felt blue, for no apparent reason. He asked me what was going on in my life. I told him we had just bought a house and moved to the country, and that I had changed jobs to another city, and that I had surgery not long ago, for an illness that I live with. He told me that, in four months, I had experienced six, of the twelve major causes of depression.

Depression is not just caused by sadness after death, or loneliness, or getting fired from your job. It IS a chemical imbalance, in your brain, that can be triggered by any number of things. The Summer changing to Fall can trigger Depression...even giving birth to a normal healthy baby can trigger depression.

Depression is a hidden disorder, often misdiagnosed. It is not something to be taken lightly, or made fun of, and can be treated with MEDICATION...and it doesn't mean that you are weak, or abnormal, either. Left untreated, Depression can lead to thoughts of suicide, insanity, and more.

(Sorry, I've gone on and on...this is a passionate subject for me!)

Depression is a product of the mind. Esp for an idle one, depression can be paralyzing and hurtful. Fortunately there are meds to combat this. There is a school of thought that attribute this mood due to chemical imbalance and poor levels of serotonin in the brain. Also some attribute this to poor levels of endorphins, the feel good chemicals.which can be obtained by eating chocolates. Depression is an illness that one has no control over.

Yes, depression is considered to be a diagnosis. The causes of depression are many and very from person to person. There are some things like cancer that can be considered a 'cause' of depression, but it is actually the reaction to the cause.

Yes, imbalance of chemicals. The brain fails to release sufficient serotonin and this causes depressed moods.

partly..
there has to be something to trigger the mind into thinking that the person is sad and not worth living. then the chemical imbalance continue to make the person feel depressed.

NO... although the mind can either choose to accept or reject depression, the mind CANNOT create it's own depression. To accept or reject anything means that there is an external source.
Depression must have come from your unwanted experiences in life. If you want to avoid it, avoid experiencing those unwanted experiences... So, it's not all from the mind... Got the idea?
