It depends what you're downloading off of it. If you're downloading copyrighted material (e.g. music, movies etc) then no it's not legal.

However the technology itself is a perfectly legal method of transferring data, it only becomes illegal when you use it for the wrong purpose.

Some of the media you d/l from is not so legal

Legal d/ls would be game patches, share ware...

Its all in what you choose to download.

Only if you use the file you downloaded for backup purposes. That means you actually own a hardcopy of the file, and you have to store the file, you can't even watch it unless you lose your hardcopy.

EDIT: This only applies to copyrighted material. Anything else is perfectly legal, like if you use it to share pictures you took with your friends.

Justas legal as peer to peer file sharing...because that is what it is. The short answer is NO. But it really depends on what you are downloading. Copyrights are still in effect.

It really depends on what you're downloading with it. Anyways, torrents blow. Newsgroups are the BEST way to download almost everything. Check and see if your ISP offers you that service, many ISPs give it to their customers for free, they just don't advertise it. You have to check yourself.

Not usually...unless the artist specifically "gives" the art to the public domain.
