No, I don't think that's true.
If a little girl has a wonderful life with Mommy and Daddy and big brother, and they are all in a wreck that kills everybody but her, then her life is instantly changed.
If a man works for a company for eighteen years, and will retire in two years, then the company shuts down in bankruptcy, his life is suddenly very different then what he had planned.
If a couple buys a house, lives together, gets engaged, plans a wedding, and one of them gets a note on their pillow that says the other has run off with the gardener, suddenly that life is pretty much non-existent.

I feel that life is determined by life...and everybody I come in contact with contributes to it, as well as myself

I have no or very little control over other people, places, and things, including those I love. I can't determine their lives. As for me, these days I don't knowingly place myself in harms way. Re. determining my own actions; well, I take responsibility for what I do, and I don't engage in risk taking behavior. But overall my life is not up to me, because I'm not in charge. I just do the best I can to get from day to day in a healthy, cost efficient manner, and try my best not to cause harm along the way..that's it.

your life is determined by your own actions, even if it is a response to other actions. even when not in control of your life, you still determine it because no matter what affect outside sources or influences have on you, the ability to react puts you behind the wheel.

In certain cases yes, my response to Jesus, this response assures me of heaven after this life is ended. I can allow God to control my actions, thus preventing me from going in the wrong direction. This is a cause and effect universe, so action on your part will create an effect that will involve you whether for good or bad.

I feel that the choices I have made to this point have shaped the person I am, and the way I react to situations. I think that the way I react to situations determines how other people react to me. I think I can totally screw up my life, or make it wonderful, just by making a decision.

Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control determine the path our lives take, but we can turn things around by the way we react to that particular circumstance.

More than you can possibly know, because I believe where I am (the conditions I experience, including those in which I was born into) are the result of actions I took in a pre-life. Akin something, I guess to Christian theology of the war in heaven or reincarnation of Hinduism/ Jainism. An evolution of soul, I guess you'd say...

Definitely. Your personal choices in life determine who you are and whether you can be considered successful in life. I do not mean to say that everything you do is right. All of us, at one time or another, commit mistakes. When we do, it is up to us to acknowledge the mistakes we made and abandon them. It is the same as "changing over a new leaf."

More or less. The problem is this: It's tough to be very deliberate about your own actions. How many times do we make terrible choices for reasons that we'll never understand?

To an extent. It's also important what you think and/or feel about your actions.
Keep this in mind:
Our thoughts and beliefs determine who we are.

My actions matter as much as if a grain in boiling pot of water had free will.
Even if i do have free will -- the sure i can influence some events, but there is INFINITELY more events that impact my life that are out of my control.
