I have a baby painted turtle. I was told to feed him once or every other day. He seems to be hungry all the time though. I just bought 2 feeder fish and he ate them in three days. (only because he was having a hard time caughting it) I feed him like 3 pellets in the morning and some brine shrimp at night. But if I don't give him that then he is trying to eat the rocks or is looking for food in the rocks. He seems to be healthy he has already shed and he is active. Any advise?

turtles are opertunistic feeders. This means that if there is food they will eat it. It is a survival technique since in the wild food is not always avalible it lets them stock up so they can go long periods without eating. You are feeding him fine. The diet of fish and pellets is exelent, but you will probably want to add a little bit of plants. Any aquatic plant he should eat, he might even eat regular grass. Overall his diet sounds very healthy, you probably don't need to feed him as often as you are but it won't hurt to maintane this feeding rate, and it will ensure that he is healthy.

Foods to offer:
- Basic diet of high-quality pelleted food is the foundation
- Supplement with live or frozen/thawed fish, worms, small shrimp, insects, etc.

Serving Size: 1-2 times the size of its head

Frequency:
- baby- every day
- young- every other day
- adult- every 3 days
- You can vary this a little, but much more contrutes to obesity.

There is nothing wrong with keeping it a little hungry. You can overfeed it once a week or so, but then it should have a 'light day' every week as well.

Although the site listed is for Red-ears, the stuff works nicely for the other pond turtles as well:

I found a baby painted turtle 6 years ago, and i fed him food pellets and the occasional veggie, but as a baby they would eat insects and worms, but i do not recommend fish because it is a little harder for them to digest and doesn't smell too good. Your best bet would be to feed it small worms after dipping them in hot water. When they get older they will start to eat food pellet all the time and will get excited when they see you coming.
I've had mine for 6 years now and he is happy and healthy. Capable of living 36 years, he has a bright future.
Also make sure the rocks aren't small enough to be accidentally swallowed.
