The house is in the mountains in which the porch was rmoved to install a new one. When the construction team removed the porch, I noticed a terrible odor eminating from the dirt. It smells like dead animals or something. I have searched the ground but see no signs of animal bones or anything. I dont want the porch put up until the smell can be taken care of. Can someone give me some idea of what can be causing this problem, and how can I get rid of it.

Lime you get it at a Lowes or garden store sprinkle it over the area and let it just stay there. they can build the new porch right over it. About once a year after that throw a few handfuls under the new porch to just keep it fresh. It does not hurt the soil it's what they use on football fields to make the white lines.

Fungus growth can be the source of it. Why don't you have the ground excavated and put new soil on it.
