Different maps use differnt symbols but it's often a square or a star. Other major cities are represented by circles of different sizes depending on the population. Often a large circle for 1 million plus inhabitants, smaller circle for 250,000 to 1 million inhabitants, small circle for 100,000 to 250,000 inhabitants and a dot for places with less than 100,000 inhabitants.
This isn't always the case and a good map will have a legend with it which explains all the symbols used.

Blue star inside a blue circle?
Except in Calif, we have a weight lifter inside a circle. Kind of like the Olympics. But it might be gone in 2007, and definitely by 2011.
