A resonator is just a pipe that is bigger around then the main pipe. Sometimes it has a plate welded into the inside with little holes drilled into it. This allows the exhaust to flow in and out of the plate All this is to get rid of the put-put that little cars have a habit of putting out when you let off of the accelerator. There should be very little restriction.

most resonators will give you 2lbs. of back pressure for every inch diameter of exhaust pipe. so a 3 inch exhaust will give you about 6lbs. of back pressure.

It depends on the diameter of the pipe, and the size of the headers!
