I think it's just an age-old stereo-type that many people are aware of, but don't necessarily apply.
I think it goes more along the lines of how people have a tendency to assume that super-attractive people are not that intelligent. Since 'blondes' carry the connotation of beauty & sex-appeal, they've just been automatically generalized as dumb.
I too, have met many smart blondes, but also a lot of not-so-smart ones; so I guess the fact that there are a percentage of blondes that are dumb kind of enforces the stereotype.

It's stereotypical.

Some "blondes" (hair color really doesn't matter, the "blondes" come from white Anglo-Saxons {WASP} that were typically wealthy) come from wealthy families and aren't exposed to many social or common interactions we see on a daily basis. When they do interact with these things, they tend to be uneducated about it. This can be something as simple as opening a car door; normally a servant will do that task for them.

Then they'll laugh out of good humor.

To me, that expression means "phony blondes are stupid". No, you're absolutely right there are many blondes out there who are smart, my bestfriend is blonde and she is smart. When I think of a "dumb blonde" I picture a skanky girl who bleaches her hair and has dark roots and loves to attract boys. There are many girls like that in my grade that are very phony and only think about boys, not about school. So, no, i don't think "natural blondes" are dumb. :D

My mother said that the reason was the blond color is rarely natural, and therefore they are dumb enough to ruin their hair by bleaching it. I don't know if she was correct for her day, but nowadays people do so many other nasty things to ruin their hair that I think this is obsolete. It is possible that it remains just because of all the jokes, but that the jokes originated when what Mama said was true.

Well I think the main reason is that some people see a blonde girl that acts really stupid so they start thinking that all blonde girls are stupid. But I know that not all of them are stupid.

I had an assistant manager who was blonde, she always had trouble with customers challenging her authority, didn't want to believe her telling them the store policies, she would call me, in tears over how rude they'd be with her. I was brunette, dyed my hair blonde one summer, and I was amazed at the conflict I started to get from the customers. They'd say "I want to speak to your manager", I'd say "I AM the manager", they'd make a face, get more rude with me. As a brunette, they'd say "are you the manager?" They were much more accepting of me. I'd always heard the blonde jokes but never realized how little respect blondes really get.

Yeahl, but most of them are hot. And if they're hot, they can get married to a guy/girl with $$$$ and not have to work. You're probably jealous that you wanna be blonde too. And you;re not hot.
