Yes, the dash will have to come out. Is it a hard job? No. It is actually very simple. Disconnect the battery. Take out the trim panel underneath the steering wheel. Drop the steering column down until the steering wheel is touching the floor of the vehicle. You will have to move driver's seat all the way back. Remove 2 Torx head bolts from each end of the dash. Remove four 8 mm bolts from defroster vent area up next to windshield. There are two 8 mm ground bolts to remove that are attached to the sheet metal on the passenger side kick panel. Then preferably with a friend, you can pick up on the passenger end of the dash and pull it out until you can rest that end in the passenger seat. All of the dash wiring will reach that far, I never unplug anything. After you pull back the dash, you will see the rectangular access panel for the heater core. This is a rather involved repair, and if you have no experience it is probably better left to a professional. Less busted knuckles and broken parts that way.

It's an awful job. I used to be a technician and service advisor for Ford. Just based on the fact that you are asking, I strongly recommend that you not attempt the repair yourself. Are you replacing because of a leak or a lack of heat? Has it been diagnosed? I ask because sometimes the heater core will flush with a cooling system service machine and some chemicals. Best of luck, the Taurus is a great car but there are a few repairs that they can need that will try your patience as an owner and especially as a technician.

You have to remove most of the dash. It will probably take you almost all day. I suggest you buy a repair manual, probably a Haynes, before your start. Read the section on replacing the heater core before you start so you know what you are getting into. That way there will be no surprises.

Yes, the dash must come out. I have a 96 taurus that had to be in the shop for 4 days to have it flushed out. I took it in because the heater wouldn't work. They used a really strong chemical to flush it, so if you do it yourself, be very careful.

well if you take out the carpet on the passenger side do you see a panel that you can take off? there it is. if nothing else try autozone.com and in the repair section it may have a walk through on removal.
