The most important advice is to get to know your class and dorm members. They will be with you throughout your four years. Second, eat a healthy and balanced diet, yes even during the orientation and the exam periods. It is really important. Last, keep in touch with old friends, they might not be there, but they will ground you in your new life. College gives you wings, your friends give you a soft place to land. Have a great freshman year!

Be respectful - this includes everything from negotiating conflicts to keeping your music down, eat well and exercise often, get enough sleep, don't drink too much, keep on top of your studies - don't waste an expensive education! - and make as many friends as you can the first year. Talk to your roommate early and often about everything from color schemes for your dorm room to schedules.

don't get caught up in the "night light" of being in college on your own for the 1st time. pick your roommate carefully. many start as great friends but end up not speaking. don't leave things you value out kin the open because your roommate will have friends that you know nothing about. make it a point to introduce yourself and get to know your resident assistant and dorm mother well. be friendly it never hurts to speak. learn who your immediate neighbors are that live around you. get involved in floor activities if you have time.

Take advantage of the opportunity to make friends with the people on your floor. Find out who's in your classes and make study groups. As a senior in college, I still kept in contact with dormmates from my freshman year. Dorm rooms are small- take a laptop if possible. Have fun, but respect those around you. Communication is key to getting along with roommates.
