Do what's in the parenthesis first and multiply by 4:
(9x)4
36x

The x is an unknown factor. It could be anything from shirts, widgets, dollars to another number. It's usually another number in algebra. For example, if x=2, then 36 * 2 = 72.

Use the distributive property to solve: 4*8x + 4*x = 32x +4x =36x
I'm a Math teacher, so you can be sure this is the correct procedure and the correct answer. (* means multiply)

multiply the 4 times the 8x and also by the x,
you get 32x + 4x, then just add common terms
answer 36x

You use the distributive property. Multiply 4 by each term to simplify, then you will get 32x + 4x. Then you just simply add. 36x.

You need to add the coefficients of the two x terms, then you multiply that sum by 4. For example, (4x+5x)*3=(9x)*3=27x

Basically:

4(8x + x). Factor it out. You have to do the "mail man" operation.

So you take 4 and muliply it by 8x and x.
4 (8x) + 4x

Simplify
32x + 4x =

36x

(8x +x)4
=32x+4x
=36x

when there is no sign between the bracket and the number it means to multiply

(8X+X)4

First: Combine the terms inside the parenthesis: 8X+1X=9X
(9X)4
Second: multiply everything inside the parenthesis by the 4: 36X

And thats your answer.

Only one other person, so far, used the order of operations. One guy even said "FOOL" and he did it wrong, thats an impressive amount of stupidity.

This is the order of operations.
Order of Operations

P:Parenthesis: Combine everything in the parenthesis
E:Exponents: Multiply everything to the power shown
M:Multiplication: Multiply everything in the order shown from left to right
D:Division: Divide everything from left to right, even if it is before multiplication
A:Add: add everything from the left to right
S:Subtract: Subtract everything from left to right, even if it is before addition
