Most probably has something to do with the fact that it was the headquarters for the Roman empire. They took over the entire of Europe, we still use their numerical system today on clocks, still speak Latin and many cities are still complete with roman architecture. Rome was the world!

Ancient technological civilizations: The Greeks, Egyptians, etc. All the "advanced" [meaning more than simple hunter-gatherer villages] civilizations were either conquered and became part of Roman Empire or were allied to it [Julius Caesar and Cleopatra]. For all of Europe, most of Western Asia and some of Northern Africa, Rome was it. Rome assimilated all of those areas. And the city of Rome was near the center of the Roman Empire. To most people of the time the Roman Empire was the known inhabited world. Yes, there are exceptions like the Chinese and Pacific Rim, but the biggest at its height was the Roman Empire.
