Richard Petty won. It was his 6th Daytona win, though he wasn't in the lead until nearly the end. The two in the lead both crashed on the 3rd turn. A.J. Foyt, Darrell Waltrip, & Petty were behind them, and duked it out, ending in Petty winning.
Incidently, the 79 500 was also the first televised Daytona 500.
