The good side? It's a very broad field with lots of options to choose from to study (linguistics, socio-cultural, biological, archaeology), with a lot of different viewpoints and approaches which make it a very dynamic field.

And the bad side? It's a very dynamic field with a lot of opposing viewpoints and approaches ;)

The good side is that it gives you a broad perspective and good analytical skills for trying to understand all aspects of human beings and their world. It is the kind of knowledge that will be beneficial every day no matter what you do -- from just going to the store to buy some bread to business decisions.

The bad side is there really is no bad side to the actual subject in and of itself, the knowledge is good and though some people say there are no jobs, anthropology students can go into almost all the same careers people in any other major can go into (unless they want to be engineers). The only thing I would say is bad is the way some academic anthropologists use so much jargon and do work that isn't as relevant for regular people as anthropology has traditionally been.

I am a sociology major but I love Anthropology. For me the upside was the fact I got to use Cultural Anthropology with my Sociology. I love it because you learn about so many different cultures, and to even use an Anthropological word, it helps you not to be freakin ethnocentric. The bad part for me, and the reason I didn't minor in it is because usually they make you learn other aspects of Anthropology that you are not interested in. For me that was physical Anthropology. I do appreciate the psysical aspect of it, but I was more into the Cultural aspect myself. I really don't care too much about DNA.

I love studying anthropology because it is opening my eyes to so many different perspectives of seeing the world and how humans deal with it. It is more concrete than psychology.

Bad side, hm I guess I am worried that I will have to have a doctorate to get a decent job, though I am told that it is not necessarily the case. Apparently anthropology is a good degree too have in business because you know how to deal with other cultures.

Well, the good side is you get to learn a lot of things about humanity and you get to travel a lot!!! Meet different kinds of people and how beautiful life is, even sometimes its hard and rough. The bad side is basically there are few career oppurtunities, unless you really have the guts! and how the public stereotypes anthropologists as "diggers for artifacts and fossils". Policy makers and the government sometimes ignore the data and recommendations from communities that needs help and their concern, that is very frustrating!

To expand on Samsas comment about the negative aspects. You will find yourself defending your beliefs and the principals of your discipline in any kind of forum, from the local bar to a college lecture hall to the courtroom.

It would not be a bad idea to take debate, to help you hone those skills as well.

The study of anthropology is vast and has never ceased to be of interest to me.

What discipline I don't get are the mathematics nuts, that sit around and play with numbers, and really seem to get something out of it.
