I like that he's motivated to exercise. He's no slacker when it comes to running or playing soccer or whatever. But it seems like I had heard somewhere along the line that boys that young should not be working out with weights. Can anyone point me to some facts to support or negate my first inclinication - which is to say "No - wait until you're a teen."

Many children show an interest in weights. When properly supervised, strength training for children is safe and can be helpful in preparing them for sports and starting good lifetime fitness habits. Contact a fitness specialist for detailed information about children and weights.

When children work with weights:

Have an adult present who knows how to use weights.
Be sure the children learn the proper form. If they don't, they can hurt themselves. They also probably won't get the full benefit of working out with weights if their form is wrong.
Be sure they don't compete with other children or even with their own past efforts. This can cause them to push themselves further than is safe.
Be sure they don't move to heavier weights too quickly. The size of the weight is not important. They will get stronger from weight training by doing the right number of repetitions and sets.

I used to work out with weights a lot, but here is what i found out. wieghts dont build "functional muscle." all they do is add size and sorta help u lift more weights. they dont build good strength because of the way they work your muscles. i would recomend callistenics such as "combat conditioning" or "the natural method" this is much safer, wont destroy his muscles, and will build strength much quicker.
If you wanna just be able to lift a bar, lift with weights, if you wanna be able to lift anything, body weight exercizes are the way to go

If he keeps asking over and over, Take him to physical
therapy, they will tell you the appropriate reps. for his age .
If you don't have time start him off with 2lb. weights
show him the way to use them, if he doesn't know the
right way.
smaller weights will have minor impact, in case he does too many
