The source quoted below defines "skepticism" as "2. an attitude of doubt or disposition toward incredulity in general or in regard to something in particular (as a supposed fact)"
For someone to be skeptical, it means that they question the basis upon which a statement is made or a belief is based. This attitude is useful because it allows asking questions and forming alternate explanations. This is particularly useful in science because a situation can be observed and questioned without taking anything for granted.
By asking neutral questions without taking anything for granted except for demonstrated facts, scientists can proved or disprove theories in a manner that will stand up to rigorous analysis by others.

Scientists are continuously skeptical. They base their beliefs upon data, by no skill thoughts or critiques. For me, the crucial party of a skeptical scientist is Dana Scully from The X-information. She avoids making leaps of religion. Like maximum scientists, she bases her suggestions on empirical information.

As Carl Sagan said - "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Scientists generally only believe in something if there is proof or evidence for that belief.

He wants evidence before considering a statement as factual. He doesn't believe in anybody's word. He's like a jury member. He wants proof before he'll give the state a conviction. He wants proof before he'll give the person making statements his credence.
