1/4 X 8 = .25 X 8 = 2 lbs
1/4 X 12 = .25 X 12 = 3 lbs
1/4 X 18 = .25 X 18 = 4.5 lbs
1/4 X 25 = .25 X 25 = 6.25 lbs

You should do your homework yourself.

let x = the number of guests
then 1/4 * x = pounds of beef needed to be served.
e.g. for 8 guests, 1/4 * 8 = 2 lbs beef.

The way you asked the question: 1/4 pound per person.

for 8 guests: 8/4= 2 pounds
12 people: 12/4= 3 pounds
18 people: 18/4= 4.5 pounds
25 people: 25/4= 6 and 1/4 pounds (6.25 pounds)

shouldn't it be..

for 8 guests = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 =8/4 =2 pounds

for 12 quests = 12/4 pounds = 3 pounds

18 quests = 18/4 = 4.5 pounds

25 quests = 25/4 = 6.25 pounds

all that you need to do is divide each number of guests by four...(because each guests uses one fourth of a pound)

8 guests - 2 pounds
12 guests - 3 pounds
18 guests - 4 1/2 pounds
25 guests - 6 1/4 pounds
